Building Resilient Kids & Strong Families

The YMCA of Greater Vancouver and Endall Elliot Associates have proposed to redevelop the Langara Family YMCA at West 49th Avenue and Alberta Street into a new community facility with the addition of two residential towers. A 20-storey highrise will provide a variety of market housing options with both condominiums and stacked townhomes, of which 74% have two or more bedrooms. A second tower will be dedicated to non-market housing. In addition to its recreational amenities, the new YMCA will also include multi-purpose rooms, a family centre, a cafe, and a 75-spot daycare. Parking will be provided in three underground levels. However, the site is well served by public transit and nearby cycling routes.

A 20-storey market residential tower will offer 2- and 3-bedroom stacked townhomes and 127 condominiums with one to three bedrooms in the following mix:

  • 28 x 3-bedroom from 1,000 – 1,100 sq ft

Amenities at Langara Family YMCA
In addition to the private indoor and outdoor amenity areas in each of the residential buildings, the new YMCA will include a six-lane swimming pool, warm water leisure pool, hot tub, gymnasium, cycling studio, 12,300-sq-ft gym, indoor walking track, multi-purpose rooms, family centre, a cafe, and a 9,000-sq-ft daycare that can accommodate 75 children. A Level 3 rooftop space will function as a large outdoor play area for the daycare. The YMCA can be expanded by two floors in the future to meet any growth in demand for the facilities.

Two additional levels, creating fifth and sixth storeys, can be added for 15,000 sq. ft. of additional space to the YMCA facility, when future demand warrants it.

Parking and Storage
A common underground parkade will provide three levels of parking for 545 bicycles and 339 vehicles, of which 13 are accessible. There are also seven loading bays.

Developer Team for Langara Family YMCA
The YMCA of Greater Vancouver Properties Foundation has chosen Endall Elliot Associates to design the Langara Family YMCA redevelopment. EEA is a growing architectural and urban design firm based in Yaletown. They have an extensive portfolio spanning complex urban mixed-use developments, residential, hotel, commercial, and recreational projects. Recent projects include the Hotel Georgia and 980 Howe Street in Vancouver.

Expected Completion for Langara Family YMCA
Construction estimated to begin in 2021 with completion for 2023.
